What is Correlation?

Correlation measures the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two variables. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) ranges from -1 to +1.

Pearson Correlation Formula

r = Σ[(xᵢ - x̄)(yᵢ - ȳ)] / √[Σ(xᵢ - x̄)² × Σ(yᵢ - ȳ)²]

Interpreting Correlation

r = 1: Perfect positive correlation
r = -1: Perfect negative correlation
0.7 to 1.0: Strong correlation
0.4 to 0.7: Moderate correlation
0.1 to 0.4: Weak correlation

Important Notes

Correlation ≠ Causation: A correlation does not imply causation
Linear only: Pearson only measures linear relationships
Outliers: Can significantly affect results
